Job applications

Filling out a job application correctly can help you land the job.

Employers use job applications to get the same type of work history and contact information from all applicants. It sounds simple, but to stand out, follow directions and fill out the application neatly and completely. Many applicants do not correctly complete the application so you will have a better chance at landing the job if you do.

Job application tips

  1. Collect all the information you will need:
    • Your name, address, phone number, email address
    • Your past job titles, main responsibilities, company name and location, dates worked
    • Name of school/s or training program/s attended, location, highest grade or degree completed
    • If you served in the military, which branch, dates of service
    • References: Name, address, phone number, business they work for
  2. If there is a place to include skills and strengths, be sure to add them.
  3. If possible, ask someone to check for any errors before you submit the application.
  4. Make a copy of your completed job application to save the information for next time.

What to say about your criminal record

Some states and cities have rules that limit when employers can ask about a criminal record during the job application process. These are sometimes called “ban the box” laws. The laws are different in different states and cities—and they can change often. The best way to find current law in your area is to search online for “ban the box law” + your location.

In general, it is important to be honest but only offer the necessary information. Read the question closely. For example, they may ask only about felonies and not misdemeanors. Or, they may ask about convictions from the past seven years only. If you are not sure how you should answer, you might want to contact a Local ReEntry Program and ask for help.

Online applications

Most jobs require completing an online application. It could be on a company’s website, online job bank, or a kiosk at a store. Most use a form that you type responses into. Many allow you to upload a copy of your resume. Some systems have a time limit.

To learn how to use an online application form, try the Practice Job Application. This form is very similar to real job applications and can be printed out to keep all your information listed in one place.

Applying in person

If you fill out an application in person:

  • Learn about the company in advance so you'll be ready to talk about why you want to work there.
  • Dress as if you were going to a job interview.
  • Treat the employees and the process with the same courtesy and respect you would at a job interview. It's a great time to leave a positive impression.
