Targeted job search

Need new ways to turn up job openings? Learn how to reach out to employers directly to uncover potential jobs.

There are just a few steps to a targeted job search, and it’s much easier and more effective than you may expect.

  1. Start with a targeted list of employers. Learn how to create this list at Research employers. These will be companies that match your preferred size, location, product or service focus, mission, etc. Once you have a manageable list of good prospects, start your outreach.
  2. Search for names, phone numbers and email addresses of hiring contacts using Business Finder, company websites, or social media. Focus on managers or directors in the area you’d like to work. Can you find connections to the company or individual through professional associations, alumni groups you’re part of, social media groups, other?
  3. Send them a short introductory email mentioning your connection and ask for advice. Ask if they could suggest ideas or next steps for you or know of job openings. You could also ask about company culture, referrals to others in the field, or other questions you have.
  • Craft your email thoughtfully to show your interest in the employer. Review their website, use position descriptions they may post, search for social media sites they maintain, and look for detailed information in business publications. (More ideas on Research employers.)
  • Describe your qualifications that seem relevant to their needs, based on what you’ve learned about the company. For example, if you’re looking for an administrative assistant position, you could clarify that they need: detail orientation, experience in related work, corporate experience with major clients, and Microsoft Office skills. Knowing this, you could include any of your matching qualifications.
  • Be sure to attach your resume and describe how you will follow up with them. Follow up with a phone call a few days later to try to schedule a meeting with them or ask about job openings or advice. Also, consider volunteering for organizations that interest you, to get an “in”.

It can be helpful to set a goal for a specific number of employers you will reach out to. Keep a calendar or list to track the dates you initiate contact so that you can manage your follow-up communications effectively.
