Visit a job fair

At job fairs, you can expect to learn about companies and open positions. Sometimes you can even apply for open jobs.

Job fairs may be held by one company, or a group of similar companies. For instance, several hotel chains may hold a hotel industry job fair. You might find some job fairs for people who are justice-impacted. (Try searching for "justice-involved job fair" on Google).

Expect to:

• Make connections that could lead to a job interview or application
• Give copies of your resume to potential employers
• Practice introducing yourself to potential employers and answering questions

Do not expect to:

• Have on-the-spot interviews (but be prepared, just in case!)
• Be given a job offer

Checklist: Before the job fair

Register in advance and plan how to get there.

Research participating employers so you have an idea of what they do. Any of them could be your next employer.

Know your career objective, for example "I'm looking for a customer service position."

Make a list of questions for employers. Ask about how they recruit and hire people with your skill set.

Bring pen, paper for notes and several copies of your resume in a folder to keep clean and uncreased.

Practice your elevator speech. Begin with a firm handshake and good eye contact. Use a clear voice and provide the employer with a brief introduction – your name and career objective. It's a good idea to practice ahead of time.

Practice your responses to interview questions in case they are asked.

Dress professionally and pay attention to personal grooming, including bringing breath mints.

Talk with recruiters, but keep conversation brief, and be aware of others waiting.

Get business cards, names, and contact information from employers.

After meeting someone, make a few notes. What did you discuss with them? Do you need to follow up with them?

Talk with other job seekers at the job fair.

Be professional, polite, and positive.

Send a thank-you e-mail or letter to remind your contacts of who you are and any specifics you discussed. Thank them for their time and ask about next steps.
