        The standards differentiate between teachers who use English as the primary medium of instruction and those who use both English and the students' home language. They also recognize the important differences that occur across the developmental levels covered by the certificate.
        Therefore, candidates who seek National Board Certification as English as a New Language teachers may choose one of the following paths: Early and Middle Childhood - Path 1--Bilingual Generalist (for bilingual education teachers who teach across content areas) and Path 2--English Language Development Specialist (for teachers who specialize in helping students gain proficiency in English and access to content across the curriculum.)
