Project management specialists provide team leadership, communication, and overall coordination for a wide variety of projects—from designing a mobile app to developing an underground mining operation. Their major focus is to deliver projects on deadline and within budget. Project management specialists make budgets and manage spending, assign tasks, and meet regularly with the project team. It’s up to the project management specialist to keep the team moving through each step and manage any roadblocks that develop. They are also responsible for minimizing risks and meeting regulations related to their industry. Many project management specialists work in construction, manufacturing, information technology, engineering, architecture, and real estate development. Their projects might include improving patient care outcomes at a hospital, designing a new website, or building a shopping mall. Many project management specialist positions require a bachelor’s degree and work experience in the industry. Some jobs in the field require a high school diploma or associates degree along with project leadership experience; candidates may start as a project coordinator or scheduler. Certifications such as Project Management Professional are helpful and may be earned after gaining related work experience.
