Are you interested in a rewarding job that provides an important service to the youth of the City of Norfolk? If so, the City of Norfolk's Police Department is seeking candidates for the position of School Crossing Guard within the Special Enforcement Division.

The part-time School Crossing Guard position is responsible for protecting and assisting students at 30 schools within the City of Norfolk. The position serves the community by ensuring the safe crossing of school children at designated crossing sections at the beginning and end of each school day. There are additional opportunities to work additional traffic control assignments during City sponsored special events. School Crossing Guards are also provided the necessary training to ensure proper methods of traffic direction.

Essential Functions

The departmental hiring rate for this position is $18.00 per hour

Essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Gather and control of children at crossing sections.

  • Signaling traffic to stop or proceed to allow for the safe crossing of children.

  • Must be able to see and hear traffic, observe the color changes of signal lights, and judge the distance and safe speed of vehicles in order to allow safe stopping distance.

  • Identify and report unsafe conditions or illegal activities at or near assigned locations.

  • Communicate safety instructions and directions to students, parents, and motorist traveling through the school zone.

  • Assist buses into and out of bus zones.

  • Provide safety and protection for school children, staff, parents, and buses.

  • Secure warrants and testify in court on rare occasions related to unsafe practices observed.

Education/Experience

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.

The preferred candidate will possess:

  • Previous experience as a School Crossing Guard.

  • Previous experience in traffic control.

  • Previous professional and/or personal experience with children.

Additional Information & Requirements

Additional Requirements :

  • Required to wear city issued uniforms that are kept in good condition and worn while on duty.

  • Ability to communicate specific instructions clearly, firmly, and courteously.

  • Ability to control a STOP paddle effectively to provide approaching road users with a clear, fully direct view of the paddles STOP message during the entire crossing movement.

  • Ability to recognize potentially dangerous traffic situations and warn and manage students in sufficient time to avoid injuries.

  • Represent the Norfolk Police Department in a professional and ethical manner.

  • Must be able to stand for up to 60 minutes at a time.

  • Must be able to walk and go up and down a curb/sidewalk.

  • Must successfully complete an interview.

  • Must be able to pass a background check.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Must have reliable transportation.

  • Must be able and willing to work in adverse conditions such as inclement weather (heat, cold, rain, wind, snow) and being close to traffic.

  • Must have good mental alertness, a neat appearance, good character, be dependable and have an overall sense of responsibility for the safety of students.

Location:

Special Enforcement Division - Assigned to school crossing corners as needed.

Hours:

One of three shift assignments available, indicated below. Shifts are assigned based off of department needs.

Monday-Friday

  • Shift One: 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 3:15 p.m.

  • Shift Two: 8:10 a.m. to 9:10 a.m. and 3:05 p.m. to 3:50 p.m.

  • Shift Three: 8:45 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. and 3:40 p.m. to 4:25 p.m.

    • Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.

    • Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.

    • Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.

    • Retirement

If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

  • The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant's school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
