DEFINITION

OPEN/PROMOTIONAL RECRUITMENT

FUTURE INCENTIVES:

Employees employed as of July 1, 2025, will receive a $2,000 lump sum non-pensionable bonus.

FUTURE SALARY INCREASES:

Effective July 1, 2025, employees will receive a three percent (3%) COLA to base pay.

INTERVIEW PROCESS WILL INCLUDE A HANDS-ON PRACTICAL DEMONSTRATION OF WELDING APPLICATIONS ON MULTIPLE MEDIUMS BY THE CANDIDATE.

The City of Stockton is seeking to fill a vacant Welder/Fabricator position in the Public Works Department. The ideal candidate should possess knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the welding trade; properties of ferrous and non-ferrous metals and the practices, procedures, materials, tools and equipment used in their cutting, bending, hardening and joining. The incumbent will work a City of Stockton 9/80 schedule: 6:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 6:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Fridays, with alternating Fridays off.

Prior to appointment, eligible candidates will be required to pass a back evaluation examination by a City Physician, and submit to and successfully pass a drug screen and background investigation, which will include fingerprinting.

Under general supervision, fabricates, repairs, and modifies a wide variety of metal parts and special equipment using electric and oxy-acetylene welding apparatus; performs related work as assigned.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is a skilled, journey-level class. It is distinguished from Welder/Fabricator Specialist, which is the more technical class and which may provide lead direction on a project on a day-by-day basis.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience:

Possession of a high school diploma or GED and four (4) years of experience in electric and oxy-acetylene welding and burning. Successful completion of an approved apprenticeship program or accredited training program may substitute for two (2) years experience.

Other Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid Class C California driver's license.

  • Must possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift and carry objects weighing up to

100 pounds.
  • Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions and in wet, cramped and awkward positions.

  • Must be willing to work overtime and off-hours shifts in emergency situations.

  • Must be willing to work with exposure to potentially hazardous fumes and gases.

  • Must provide own tools as determined by the City.

  • Specialized tools will be provided by the City.

  • A valid Class A California driver's license is desirable.

The Examination:

Applicants who qualify in terms of relevant work experience and education, that best fit the needs of the City, will be invited to participate in the examination process. The examination process may include a training and experience or practical examination weighted 100%. However, the City reserves the right to utilize alternative testing methods if deemed necessary. Candidates must receive a minimum passing score of 70%, as determined by the relative performance of all candidates in all portions of the examination. In the event of identical ratings, candidates' names will be arranged in order of application date/time, and, if the same, then arranged alphabetically.
