PODIATRIST
License Description
PODIATRIST
Means one who examines, diagnoses, or treats medically, mechanically, or surgically, the ailments of the human foot, ankle and soft tissue structures extending no higher than the distal tibial metaphyseal flair, including the use and prescribing of drugs and medications, but excluding the direct applications of general anesthesia by a podiatrist and the amputation of the foot. A podiatrist may perform Achilles tendon repair, subject to the provisions of T.C.A. 63-3-101, but may not perform surgery on Pilon fractures or tibial fractures which do not enter the ankle joint.
REQUIREMENTS:
Be at least 18 years of age, have completed at least a one year of residency, and satisfy education and examination requirements.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Graduate from a podiatric medical college accredited by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education and American Podiatric Medical Association. The educational requirements must be completed prior to the date of application.
EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS:
Three examinations are required: Parts I and II of the National Board Examination, PM Lexis, and a written Jurisprudence examination administered by the state Board.
CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
(15) hours of continuing education yearly, at least one (1) hour of the annual fifteen (15) hours requirement shall, every other calendar year, be a course designed specifically to addressing prescribing practices.
RENEWAL:
Renewal is required every two years on the last day of the birth month on even or odd year as the birth year is even or odd.
