License Description
ORTHOPEDIC PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT
Provides services under the supervision of a licensed orthopedic physician or surgeon in accordance with written policies and procedures involving management of care which have been established by the supervising physician and orthopedic physician assistant; may render follow-up care to check and record patient's progress within the confines of written protocol and report progress and changes to the physician after each visit; may render emergency services in accordance with guidelines previously established by the supervising physician pending arrival of a responsible physician in cases where immediate diagnosis and treatment are necessary to avoid disability or death. Only those licensed can practice. Temporary licenses can be issued. Permanent licenses may use designation OPA or Orthopedic Physician Assistant (but not PA or Physician Assistant).
REQUIREMENTS:
The applicant must submit evidence of good moral character and that he or she has met the educational and examination requirements. Must designate a primary supervising physician. Temporary licenses are issued to applicants who have completed the educational requirement or are licensed in another state, with certain restrictions.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Graduation from an orthopedic physician assistant training program approved by the licensing authority and the Board of Medical Examiners. (Exemption from this requirement is made for those who meet the Examination requirement and were performing services as an orthopedic physician assistant in this state on May 30, 1995)
EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS:
Successful completion of examination of the National Board for Certification of Orthopedic Physician Assistants.
