License Description
PSYCHOLOGIST
Psychologists may observe, evaluate, interpret and modify human behavior by the application of psychological principles, methods and procedures for the purpose of eliminating or preventing maladaptive behavior and of enhancing interpersonal relationships, work and life adjustment, personal effectiveness, physical health, behavioral health, and mental health. Psychological practice may involve diagnosis and treatment of mental, emotional and nervous disorders and disabilities, and treatment of alcoholism and substance abuse. Techniques may include counseling, psychoanalysis, group therapy, marital and family therapy, hypnosis, biofeedback and behavior therapy. With designation as a health service provider may deliver preventive, assessment and therapeutic intervention services to individuals whose growth, adjustment or functioning is actually impaired or may be at risk of impairment.
REQUIREMENTS:
Satisfy the experience, education, and examination requirements.
EXPERIENCE:
One year full time or two years part time internship. For health service provider designation a minimum 1 year postdoctoral experience delivering health services is required.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Psychologist - Doctorate degree in psychology with a minimum number of credit hours in specific areas of psychology. For telepsychology may allow three years of graduate work towards a doctoral degree in psychology and one year towards a master's degree, and a residency. Health Service Provider designation - doctoral work must include a formal, supervised practicum.
EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS:
Licensed Psychologist: Written Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) and Tennessee Ethics and Jurisprudence examination based on laws and rules. A temporary license may be issues for one year and may be renewed; however, it will be revoked after two failures of the EPPP.
