Water Well Contractor
License Description

Water Well Contractors set up and operate machinery to dig or drill for water. Ensure that wells are maintained in a proper condition and do not cause contamination or pollution of the water supply. A contractor license is required of any entity or individual engaged in well construction. Water well construction means any method, procedure, or operation to obtain water from a well, including drilling, digging, well development (by hydro fracturing or other methods), well decommissioning, and wells for geothermal heat exchange.

Licensure Requirements:

  • Be actively engaged in the trade for a period of three years prior to the date of application, with experience directly related to the type of license issued
  • One year of experience for drilling contractors shall be in drilling water wells in crystalline rocks of the Appalachian region
  • Pass an examination prepared and administered by the New Hampshire Water Well Board
  • Obtain the appropriate license from the Board

Examination:  Written examination required

Continuing Education: Not required

Fees:

  • Application: $25
  • Examination: $10 for each license category
  • Rotary license: $225
  • Technical license: $225
  • Cable Tool license: $150
  • Point well license: $150
  • Dug well license: $100
    All licenses expire annually on June 30

Reciprocity: No reciprocal agreements with other states currently exist
