Water Treatment Plant Operator
License Description

Water Treatment Plant Operators are responsible for the purification processes of water to be used as public water supplies. Meter chemicals into water based on analytical testing and continuous monitoring to produce a safe, aesthetically pleasing water. Test samples of water throughout the process and record results to assure water quality. Certified operators are required for community (residential) and non-transient, non-community (such as schools and workplaces) public water systems.

Certification Requirements:

  • Satisfactory physical condition
  • Be able to read and write in the English language
  • High school graduate
  • Postsecondary education according to grade, with a concentration in environmental engineering, civil engineering, environmental sciences, or related fields, where 30 semester hours of study is equivalent to one year of postsecondary education
  • Operating experience according to grade
  • Varying experience and education requirements depending on grade of operator:
    • Grade I-A: 12 years education and 6 months experience
    • Grade I: 12 years education and 1 year experience
    • Grade II: 12 years education and 3 years experience
    • Grade III: 14 years education and 4 years experience
    • Grade IV: 16 years education and 6 years experience

Examination:  Written examination required. Applicants successfully completing a written examination may be required to obtain a satisfactory grade in an oral examination prior to certification. Applicants will be notified of the test results as early as practicable.

Continuing Education: Required for renewal – five hours for Grade I-A and 20 hours for Grades I - IV

Fees:

  • Application: $50
  • Biennial renewal: $50

Reciprocity: Permitted with a limited number of states
