Medication Aide
License Description

Occupational Description

A Medication Aide (MA) assists in the provision of medications. The MA provides medications according to the ‘Five Rights': right drug, right dose, right time, right route, and right person. The role of a MA is regulated and requires direction and monitoring from either the individual receiving the medications, or the caretaker of the individual (i.e., parents, foster parents, family friends, legal guardian, or a licensed health care professional such as a physician, pharmacist, nurse, etc.). The individual providing direction and monitoring is responsible to observe and take appropriate action regarding any desired effects, side effects, interactions, and contraindications associated with the medication.

Licensure Requirements

Medication Aides do not require licensure, but placement on a registry is required. Applicants must: 1. Be at least 18 years of age; 2. Possess good moral character; 3. Complete the requirements for competency assessment. (These requirements may range from a formalized course to on-the-job training, and from a formal written test to demonstration of skills. The actual format of competency assessment depends on the work setting of the MA.) A MA must be listed on the Nebraska Department of Health & Human Services Licensure Unit registry within the correct category for the type of facility at which they will be working. (Nursing students and out-of-state applicants are encouraged to check the website for specific information on how to be placed on the Nebraska Medication Aide registry.)
