Athletic injuries are the types of musculoskeletal injury or common illness and conditions which Athletic Trainers are educated to treat or refer, incurred by athletes, which prevent or limit participation in sports or recreation. Persons who solely use heat, cold, air, water or exercise are not considered to be practicing Athletic Training.

Licensure Requirements


Applicants must submit the following: 1. Completed application; 2. Licensure fee payment; 3. Evidence of being at least nineteen years of age; 4. Citizenship, lawful permanent residence, and/or immigration status information; 5. If an applicant holds, or has previously held, a credential to provide health services, health-related services, or environmental services in Nebraska or in another jurisdiction, they must have the licensing agency submit a certification of their credential(s); 6. If an applicant has previously had any disciplinary actions taken against their credential, they must submit a copy of the disciplinary action(s), including charges and disposition; 7. Information about any felony or misdemeanor convictions; 8. The following documentation that the applicant has satisfied minimum educational requirements. This can be met by submitting either: A. An official transcript (issued and sealed by the issuing Institution) showing completion of athletic training curriculum that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Athletic Training Education in conjunction with the Council for Higher Education Accreditation; OR B. An official transcript from an accredited college or university accredited by North Central Association of Colleges and Schools or a comparable regional accrediting body with a four-year degree and documentation (via a Verification of Student Athletic Training form) of at least two consecutive years of student athletic training under the supervision of an athletic trainer approved by the Board. In order for the supervising trainer to be approved by the Board, the trainer must have been overseen either: i. Under the supervision of an athletic trainer who was licensed in Nebraska; -OR- ii. An athletic trainer in another state who met Nebraska licensure requirements at the time the student training was performed 9. Official documentation of passing the Board of Certification Examination. Scores must be sent directly from the Board of Certification. Applicants may contact them at www.bocatc.org to request that certification be sent electronically. 10. Verification of Student Athletic Training from the Supervising Athletic Trainer, if applicable (for graduates of a four-year degree program in a subject other than Athletic Training); 11. Documentation of continuing competency if the applicant has previously passed the licensure examination, but is not currently practicing, or if they are licensed in another state but not currently practicing.

Fees


Initial License Fee: $117.00

Renewal


Renewals are due by May 1 of each odd-numbered year. The renewal fee is $117.00. Prior to renewal, each athletic trainer with an active license must: 1. Either: A. Hold current certification from the Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer (BOC, Inc.) -OR- B. Complete 25 hours of continuing education during the preceding 24 month period; 2. Hold a current cardiopulmonary (CPR) certificate from a nationally recognized organization that issues CPR certificates. Licensees are responsible for maintaining until the next renewal period documentation of their attendance at, or participation in, continuing education programs or activities.
