License Description
Occupational Description
Marriage and Family Therapists engage in the assessment and treatment of mental and emotional disorders, whether cognitive, affective, or behavioral, within the context of marriage and family systems, through the professional application of psychotherapeutic and family systems theories and techniques in the delivery of services to individuals, couples, and families for the purpose of treating such disorders.
Licensure Requirements
No individual shall hold himself or herself out as a Certified Marriage and Family Therapist (CMFT) until such individual has obtained a credential under the Uniform Credentialing Act for that purpose. To obtain a CMFT license, an applicant must also obtain/hold a license as a Mental Health Practitioner or Independent Mental Health Practitioner, and meet the following requirements: 1. Have a master's or doctoral degree in marriage and family therapy from a program approved by the Board, or a graduate degree in a field determined by the Board to be related to marriage and family therapy and graduate-level course work determined by the Board to be equivalent to a master's degree in marriage and family therapy; 2. Provide evidence to the Department that he or she has had at least 3,000 hours of experience in marriage and family therapy under a qualified supervisor following receipt of the graduate degree; 3.Pass an examination approved by the Board; 4. Be at least 19 years of age; 5. Be either a citizen of the United States, an alien lawfully admitted into the United States who is eligible for a credential under the Uniform Credentialing Act, or a nonimmigrant who is lawfully present in the United States and who is eligible for a credential under the Uniform Credentialing Act.

Initial Certification Fee- $50.00
Renewal
Renewal is required biennially by September 1 of even numbered years. The renewal fee is $50.00 Thirty-two hours of continuing education are required biennially to qualify for renewal.
