License Description DESCRIPTION OF OCCUPATION: An Osteopathic Physician and Surgeon diagnoses and treats diseases and injuries of the human body using accepted methods of treatment, including drugs and surgery. Places special emphasis on the body's musculoskeletal system, preventive medicine, and holistic patient care. REQUIREMENTS FOR LICENSING: Personal requirements: Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or an alien authorized to work in the U.S. Professional requirements: 1) File a National Practitioner Data Bank report. 2) Submit the American Osteopathic Association Physician Profile. 3) Submit Certificate of Competency completed by 2 osteopathic physicians. Experience requirements: Serve an internship of at least 1 year in a hospital approved by the American Osteopathic Association and the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons, or in a program accredited by the ACGME. Education requirements: Graduate of a school or college of osteopathy which is approved by the American Osteopathic Association. EXAMINATIONS: Pass all levels, parts or steps of the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners exam (NBOME); the COMPLEX-USA; the Federation Licensing Exam (FLEX); the United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) exam; or a combination of parts of the FLEX and USLME as approved by the Board. FEES: Between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2023, pay $510 (application $50, license $260 compliance resolution fund $148, 1/2 renewal fee $52) OTHER: There were 485 licenses currently active as of February 24, 2022. ~ revised 06/21
