License Description DESCRIPTION OF OCCUPATION: A Barber provides grooming services to customers including cutting, trimming, coloring, waving, curling, shampooing, and styling hair. May also give shaves as well as other hair and scalp treatments. REQUIREMENTS FOR LICENSING: Personal requirements: Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or alien authorized to work in the U.S. Be at least 17 years of age. Experience requirements: At least 1,500 hours of barber school or apprenticeship training. EXAMINATIONS: Exam given by Prometric - offered in different formats depending on island. Computer-based Format: Hawaii & Oahu Written Format: Kauai & Maui *Written examinations are scheduled four times a year, usually in March, June, September, and December. APPLICATION AND FEES: $20 for application. Renewal fee every 2 years is $46. Temporary permit is $37. In 2022, pay $139 (license $16, CRF $100 + 1/2 renewal $23) In 2023, pay $66 (license $16, CRF $50) OTHER: There were 1,239 licenses currently active as of February 24, 2022. ~ revised 09/20
