License Description
Occupational Description
A Professional Engineer is a person who is licensed by the Board to practice engineering. Practice of engineering means any service or creative work that requires engineering education, training, and experience in the application of special knowledge of the mathematical, physical, and engineering sciences. The services may include, but not be limited to: Planning; Providing studies, designs, drawings, specifications, and other technical submissions; Administering construction contracts. The practice of engineering does NOT include the practice of architecture.
Licensure Requirements
A person applying for licensure as a professional engineer in Nebraska must submit a completed applicationalong with applicable filing fees. A separate application is required for each discipline the licensee wishes to be licensed. Initial Licensure Education- A degree from an ABET/EAC or CACB-accredited engineering program. Persons not holding a degree from an ABET/EAC or CACB-accredited engineering program must have their education evaluated by National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Credentials Evaluations to determine if the individual's education meets the NCEES Education Standard. Any deficiencies must be removed prior to approval by the Board. Examination- Successful passage the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam and the Principles and Practice of Engineering. All exams are administered through NCEES for the Board. For exam specifications, visit the NCEES website. Experience- Show satisfactory evidence of four years of progressive engineering experience acceptable to the Board. A master's Degree in engineering may count toward one year experience, and a doctorate in engineering may count toward two years' experience. Licensure by Comity Hold an NCEES Record in good standing, which verifies that the applicant meets NCEES Model Law Engineer (MLE) standards;-OR Meet the initial licensure requirements in Nebraska;-OR Have been licensed for a minimum of 15 years as a Professional Engineer in at least one other licensing jurisdiction in good standing. All Professional Engineer license candidates must also pass an exam on the statutes, rules, andother requirements unique to Nebraska. Fees
Fees are set by the Board and are subject to change. Check the Board's website for current fees. License Application Filing Fee- $150.00 PE Examination Application Filing Fee- $30.00 (Additional testing fees are required after approval by the Board, and are determined by the exam administrator) PE Examination Retake Application Filing Fee- $30 (Additional testing fees are required after approval by the Board, and are determined by the exam administrator) Fees related to the FE exam will be determined by NCEES.
Renewal
Renewal is due biennially by December 31. Individuals with last names starting with the letters A through K renew in odd-numbered years; individuals with last names starting with the letters L through Z renew in even-numbered years. The renewal fee is $80.00. Late Renewal Fee- 10% of biennial fee each month late, but late fees may not exceed the amount of the regular biennial fee. After a license has been expired for one year or more, a new application is required and licensee must meet the current licensing requirements in place at the time of application.
