Veterinarian
License Description Doctors of Veterinary Medicine diagnose and treat numerous diseases and injuries in animals. Because much of their work is involved with commercial livestock, veterinarians play an important role in the nation's food production. They are also important to the overall public health program preventing the outbreak of animal diseases, many of which can be spread to humans. Veterinarians perform surgery on sick and injured animals, and also prescribe and administer drugs, medicines, serums, and vaccines. Most veterinarians are general practitioners who treat livestock, as well as pets. Those who live in large, metropolitan areas work almost exclusively on their client's pets, while those practicing in rural areas usually specialize in treating farm animals. Many veterinarians are employed in federal and state health programs, conducting inspections on meat, poultry, and other foods. Others are on the faculties of veterinary colleges or are engaged in various types of research. Requirements: 1) Must be at least 21 years of age. 2) Must be a citizen of the United States or resident alien. 3) Must be a person of moral integrity and acceptable ethical standards. 4) Must be a graduate of an American Veterinary Medical Association-accredited veterinary college or holder of an Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduate (ECFVG) or Program for the Assessment of Veterinary Education Equivalence (PAVE) certificate. 5) Must pass the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE). 6) Must pass the Written State Board Examination or be licensed by endorsement or reciprocity. Application Fee: $100.00, Temporary Permit Fee: $50.00, Annual Renewal Fee (active): $100.00, Annual Renewal Fee (inactive): $25.00, NAVLE Fee: $720.00 (paid directly to the International Council for Veterinary Assessment)
