PRINCIPAL AUCTIONEER
License Description
AUCTIONEER
An auctioneer is an individual who, for a fee, commission, or any other valuable consideration or expectation of same, engages in offering, negotiating, or attempting to negotiate a listing contract, sale, purchase, or exchange of goods by means or process of auction or sale at auction. The auctioneer can deal in real property only if licensed as a Real Estate Broker or Real Estate Affiliate. (Among many exemptions to registration requirements are volunteers for churches, charitable organizations or political parties, tobacco warehouses, government agencies, and court ordered or sanctioned auctions.)
REQUIREMENTS:
Be at least 18 years of age; honesty, trustworthiness, integrity, good reputation, and competence; and satisfy the experience and examination requirements.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Experience serving as an apprentice auctioneer under the supervision of a licensed full-time auctioneer for a period of two years.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
80 hours of classroom instruction in the fundamentals of auctioneering at an auction school accredited by the commission.
EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS:
Examination includes reading, writing, spelling, ethics, licensing, elementary arithmetic, elementary principles of land economics, and Tennessee law relating to bulk sales, auctions, and brokerage. The examination is of a more exacting nature and scope than the examination for an apprentice auctioneer.
RENEWAL:
Every two years.
