License Description PUBLIC SAFETY TELECOMMUNICATORS SOC Code 43-5031 Entry Salary $19.01/hr Average Salary $22.03/hr Job Description Dispatchers answer and dispatch emergency calls via law enforcement and emergency tele-communications equipment. Requirements 1. Must be a United States citizen. 2. Must be an adult. 3. Must meet hiring agency requirements. 4. Complete a dispatcher basic training course. Must be completed within two years of being hired. 5. Hold a high school diploma or equivalent. 6. Be of good moral character. Continuing Education There are 4 levels of certification for Dispatchers: 1. Temporary Certificate: Certificate is valid for two years and certificate holder must attend dispatcher basic training. 2. Basic Certificate: Issued after completion of basic training or upon successfully completing a challenge process. Dispatcher must advance to an advanced certificate within two years. 3. Advanced Certificate: Issued after one year of service at the basic level plus 20 hours of training. Dispatcher must progress to professional certificate within three years. 4. Professional Certificate: Dispatcher must have a high school diploma or GED plus 40 hours of training plus 36 months of service as an advanced dispatcher OR they must have an associates degree plus 20 hours of training plus 24 months of service as an advanced dispatcher OR they must have a bachelors degree plus 12 months of service as an advanced dispatcher. After reaching the professional level certification, dispatchers are required to complete 20 hours of continuing training every 24 months. Restrictions Candidates may not have been convicted of a felony. An extensive background check is done before someone is hired. Must be free of any physical, mental, or emotional problems that might adversely affect performance as a dispatcher. Examination The two-week basic course is offered through the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy. Certificates are awarded upon completion. Fees None.
