Occupational Description
A Nebraska Notary Public is appointed and commissioned by the Secretary of State for a four-year term to serve the public as a disinterested witness to take acknowledgements, depositions, and to administer oaths and affirmations.
Licensure Requirements
Applicants must:1. Be a resident of Nebraska; or be a resident of a state boarding Nebraska and have a regular place of employment within the State of Nebraska.2. Be at least 19 years of age;3. Have not been convicted of a felony or other crime involving fraud or dishonesty within the past five years;4. Take and pass a written Notary Examination,5. Submit:A. A completed application;B. A $15,000 surety bond;C. A Citizenship Attestation form;D. A $30.00 fee for the commission.E. An Evidence of Employment in Nebraska form (for non-Nebraska residents). Upon issuance of the commission by the Secretary of State's Office, the Notary must purchase an inked seal stamp. It must be engraved with:· State of Nebraska· General Notary" or "General Notarial"· His or her name (as commissioned)· The expiration date of the commission.
Fees
Initial Application Fee- $30.00
Renewal
Every four years, a Notary must submit a completed renewal application, along with all additional items required in the initial application process, within the immediate 30 days prior to commission expiration date.Applicants for renewal do NOT need to retake the Notary Examination.Renewal Application Fee- $30.00
