License Description
CERTIFIED INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST
Practices the science and art devoted to anticipation, recognition, evaluation and control of environmental factors or stresses arising in or from the workplace which may cause sickness, impaired health or significant discomfort or impaired efficiency among workers. Must meet certification requirements to use the title Certified Industrial Hygienist.
REQUIREMENTS:
Certification by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene as a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or Industrial Hygienist in Training (IHIT) OR Satisfaction of education and experience requirements below.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
Degree from an accredited college/university in industrial hygiene, engineering, chemistry, physics, biology, medicine, or related physical or biological science and acquisition, through special studies and training, of competence in recognizing environmental stresses in the workplace, understanding their effects, evaluating on the basis of experience and with the aid of quantitative measures and techniques the magnitude of such stresses in terms of ability to impair health and well-being, and prescribing methods to eliminate, control or reduce such stress when necessary to alleviate their effects.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
A Professional Industrial Hygienist requires 3 years industrial hygiene experience. [A completed master's degree in a related physical or biological science, or in a related engineering discipline may be substituted for 1 year of experience. A doctorate may be substituted for an additional year.]
EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS:
The American Board of Industrial Hygiene, 6015 West St Joseph, Suite 102, Lansing, MI 48917, (517) 321-2638 requires exam for certification as CIH or IHIT.
