Elevator Inspector
License Description
GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION Inspects elevators, escalators and moving walks in Kentucky once per year to ascertain that unit meets safety standards. Runs / witness tests and inspects for compliance of code requirements on each new or altered elevator, escalator, moving walk, dumbwaiter, platform / stair / wheelchair lift, and other various equipment in order to issue certificate of compliance, attesting that the installation meets all safety code requirements. EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS Must be a high school graduate and hold a Certificate of Competency from the Department. EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS Contact the regulatory agency for application and procedures. Examinations scheduled any normal work day. For specific details contact the agency. Type examination; certification test from the following standards: Safety Code For Elevators and Escalators - ASME A7.1, Inspectors' manual-ASME A17.2, Safety Code for Existing Elevators and Escalators - ASME A17.3, The National Electric Code - ANSI/NEPA 70. Must score 70% or more to be certified. $10.00 examination should you fail, retake within six (6) months. GENERAL INFORMATION for LICENSURE or CERTIFICATION Applicant must be at least eighteen (18) years of age. Must be in general good health and able to climb on top of and underneath elevators, and maneuver vertical ladders and stairs to various heights; to check safety equipment. Must be courteous, honest, trustworthy, sober and have good communication skills to deal with the public. There is no license fee, as this is a state employment position. Kentucky has no reciprocity with any state, however other states use the same code requirements. CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS (after licensure or certification) Seminars are conducted periodically for inservice training. SPECIAL COMMENTS or CONDITIONS Hazardous conditions exist for elevator inspectors, which requires that they use extreme caution in their work.
