License Description
MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNOLOGIST
Performs tests requiring independent judgment and responsibility with minimal supervision in specialties or subspecialties for which qualified, may be limited to one specialty.
REQUIREMENTS:
National certification by exam, required education, NAACLS approved training program or experience.
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:
Initial applicant: Baccalaureate Degree, in medical technology or in a Biological, Chemical or Physical science with completiong of NAACLS approved training
OR
Baccalaureate Degree with MLT/CLT training program, 3 years approved expeerience
OR
Baccalaureate Degree, 50 week military laboratory training program and have held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist and 3 years of full time clinical work experience
OR
Baccalaureate degree and five (5) years of full time clinical work experience program. (If certified before 1/1/1997) 90 semester hours including qualifying program equivalence and NAACLS or Board approved medical laboratory technologist program.
Other applicant: Passing grade on a Health and Human Services proficiency exam and 5 years approved experience and national certification prior to September 1, 1997.
RENEWAL:
License must be renewed every two years.
NATIONAL CERTIFICATION AGENCIES approved for specialties as indicated.
Andrology (A), Chemistry (Ch), Cytogenetics (Cg), Flow Cytometry (FC), Hematology(He), Histocompatibility/Immunogenetics (HI), Immunohematology (I), Microbiology (M), Toxicology (T) American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) Board of Registry, (Ch, He, I, M, FC) National Registry in Clinical Chemistry (NRCC), (M) National Registry of Microbiologist(ABHI) and American Board of Bioanalysis (ABB) . Histotechnologists are not licensed by the TN Medical Laboratory Board.
