License Description
CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS AND JAILERS SOC Code 33-3012 Entry Salary $21.31/hr Average Salary $24.24/hr Job Description Correctional Officers are employed by the Wyoming Department of Corrections on a full-time basis to care for, supervise and maintain custody of persons confined in Wyoming Department of Corrections Institutions. Requirements 1. Must be a United States citizen. 2. Be an adult. 3. Be of good moral character. 4. Hold a high school diploma or equivalent. 5. Submit to a background check. 6. Submit to a criminal history check. 7. Submit fingerprints. 8. Successfully pass an oral interview by the hiring agency. 9. Have completed a Commission approved correctional officer basic training program 10. Be free of any physical, emotional or mental conditions which might adversely affect the applicants performance as a Correctional or Detention Officer. Continuing Education There are 4 levels of certification for Corrections Officers: 1. Temporary Certificate: Certificate is valid for one year and certificate holder must attend detention officer basic training. 2. Basic Certificate: Issued after completion of basic training or upon successfully completing a challenge process plus completing corrections core competencies. Officer must advance to an advanced certificate within two years. 3. Advanced Certificate: Issued after one year of service at the basic level plus 20 hours of training. Officer must progress to professional certificate within three years. 4. Professional Certificate: Officer must have a high school diploma or GED plus 40 hours of training plus 36 months of service as an advanced corrections officer OR they must have an associates degree plus 20 hours of training plus 24 months of service as an advanced corrections officer OR they must have a bachelors degree plus 12 months of service as an advanced corrections officer. After reaching the professional level certification, corrections officers are required to complete 20 hours of continuing training every 24 months. There are separate requirments for reserve corrections officers. Contact the Wyoming Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission for more information. Restrictions Conviction of a felony. Must not have been convicted of an offence that would make the applicant ineligible to own or possess a firearm. School Located in Wyoming Training for Correctional Officers is provided by the Wyoming Department of Corrections in Rawlins, WY. License Correctional Officers in Wyoming are licensed by the Wyoming POST Commission. Examination For applicants who complete the POST certified Basic courses, testing is a part of the curriculum before they can successfully complete Basic and become certified. For applicants who were trained and certified in other states, they may challenge Wyoming Basic by taking a written exam administered by POST, as well as meeting other requirements. Fees None.
