Aircraft Mechanic
License Description The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certifies aircraft mechanics. Mechanics must be at least 18 years old, be able to read, speak, write and understand English, and pass written, oral and practical exams. The FAA requires graduation from an FAA-approved school or at least 18 months of work experience for an airframe or power plant certificate. For a combined certificate, an applicant must be a graduate of an approved school or have at least 30 months of experience working with both engines and airframes. The FAA requires on-going training for those who have an airframe and powerplant certificate. Aircraft repairmen are also certified by the FAA. The certificate is issued for specific tasks performed under supervision (such as in FAA-approved repair stations). To obtain an inspector's authorization, a mechanic must have held an airframe and power plant certificate for at least three years. Visit the FAA website for more information.
