Marsha Flanagan: So for IAEE, a competency model is really important to workforce development and to creating a career path for those in the industry whether they are entering as a student or um, going through that life-long learning path.
I feel a strength of having a competency model for your industry allows you to partner with the various companies and their human talent development departments and that will definitely enhance the workforce within the industry, it provides a clearer career path and it will setup success for all workers in the future to grow.
M.T. Hickman: I think for students a competency model is important because it ensures that they are getting the education that they need to get the job that they want.
The model has been proven, it has been developed by industry, by HR Professionals and we feel like this is the best way that we can ensure that students are getting the quality education that they're asking for.
Janet Sperstad: The State of Wisconsin for their Technical College System has looked at the Competency Model Clearinghouse and looked at specifically those competencies and every degree in Event Management in the State of Wisconsin uses those competencies to develop their curriculum.
And so when someone comes to Wisconsin and they get an Event Management degree, they have assurance that no matter what college they go to, these are competencies that are embedded in a wider scope of the profession. So they have really assurance that they're learning real world competencies that match the marketplace need from employers as well their learning knowledge.
M.T. Hickman: My advice for someone looking at this tool is to make sure that you explain to them that we're looking to ensure quality, we're not looking at dramatically changing things, we just want to make sure that we're teaching what we think is the best possible skills for the students when they graduate.
